Since early 2019 Al has served as an external health and safety consultant for a client with six retail / wholesale locations in Alberta and British Columbia, within the hardware / home building centre industry. They have a 200+ employees who are led by management teams within each location. The day-to-day responsibility for safety program implementation rests with the leadership in each location, to whom Al provides ongoing support, technical assistance and inspection services. The client approached Al after becoming dissatisfied with their in-house health and safety personnel, and wanted someone to help them demonstrate management’s strong commitment to a practical and affordable health and safety program that could be easily used by staff in all positions.
Al serves as a resource person to the HR team with respect to WorkSafeBC and WCB matters, provides Joint Health and Safety Committee training and facilitation, conducts weekly site inspections, develops customized policies and procedures as required, delivers technical support to all members of the management team, and builds rapport with all staff at each location to help instill a robust health and safety culture.
Staff indicate that they are confident they can bring their safety concerns forward to management and that the concerns will be addressed in a timely and effective manner; while management is appreciative of the strengthening of the overall safety culture, based on the practical, cost-effective and professional solutions recommended by Al.
