Residential developer with 45+ years in the business approached Al for assistance with a large single-family project in the south Okanagan. The development is a multi-year endeavour and Al has provided regular on-site inspection services for 5+ years to facilitate the consistent application of their health and safety program. The on-site team includes staff and sub-contractors, and ranges from a low of 20 people to a high of 60 people per day. The rural construction site is 70 acres in size, and includes 285 residential lots along with a complete utility infrastructure.

The client needed a dedicated health and safety professional to take a practical approach to their daily safety program implementation, and one who could quickly learn/adapt to emerging challenges. In addition to conducting inspections, Al continues to facilitate the Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings, perform ongoing review and revision of the health and safety program, develop new policies and procedures as required, and maintains exceptional relationships with local regulatory authorities.

Keys to success for this client include building a strong rapport with all of the staff, who come and go according to the needs of the construction schedule, excellent foresight to identify and solve issues before they develop, and practising flexibility to ensure challenges are solved in a win/win manner while still keeping people safe.

Al’s continued presence ensures that the site, staff, sub-contractors, residents and visitors are safe, and that the development team can concentrate on delivering 25-30 quality homes per year.
